Missouri's Parks-And-Soils Sales Tax
Supports The Nation's Top Program
The tax has been in place since 1984 and is credited with the rebirth of Missouri’s state park system and critical improvements in soil erosion rates statewide. Every 10 years the tax comes before voters for renewal.
· The statewide sales tax is one-tenth-of-one cent and it currently generates about $82 million annually, with funds split evenly between state parks and soil conservation programs.
· By law, the tax can not be used for any other purpose.
· The state park system and soil conservation program are dependent on the tax; neither program receives any general revenue from the state.
Since the tax was first put in place in 1984, it has been renewed three times, first in 1988, again in 1996 and in 2006, each time by a two-to-one margin. For more details, click here to read about the history and importance of this support.
